Patentability Search
or Novelty Search

A Patentability Search, also called a Novelty Search, is an essential step in the development of any new product. Knowing the relevant prior art is critical when deciding to invest in patent protection of an invention. Generally, for an invention to be patentable it must be novel and nonobvious. Whether or not the invention meets these requirements can be determined by comparing the invention to the prior art.

The Patentability Search includes searching US and foreign patent/published patent application databases as well as non-patent literature databases. Our experienced search professionals select relevant prior art references from these search results and provide excerpt segments of the references to highlight the relevance of the reference in the search report. In addition, search professionals can provide an analysis of the invention by breaking down the invention into elements and then mapping the relevant segments from the references to the corresponding elements of the invention.

Typically, Patentability Searches are completed within 3-5 business days and cost between $500 and $800, plus $50 to $100 for analysis.
